Brief Description: Provides entry-level aerial operators knowledge/skills to meet the min. JPRs in NFPA 1002.

Full Description: The Driver Operator Aerial course is to provide entry-level aerial operators with the knowledge and skills to meet the minimum job performance requirements outlined in NFPA 1002. This class is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the design, maintenance, operation, and deployment of aerial apparatus. Students will be introduced to the various types of aerial apparatus and aerial devices that are used in the fire service, the inspection and maintenance of aerial apparatus, safe procedures for stabilization, aerial device operation, and the tactical deployment of aerial devices. Students will participate in drills that require positioning, stabilizing, and operating aerial apparatus and aerial devices under mock emergency conditions.

Candidates must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to function safely and effectively as an aerial operator. Students will be required to operate aerial apparatus during a final practical skills testing.

Students shall understand and follow all instructions pertaining to operational safety, as stated by instructors or as written in course materials. Instructors and students shall be mindful of safety at all times. Conduct judged to be unsafe shall be grounds for dismissal from the course.

Resources Required: In order to test for this certification you must meet the prerequisite of being a First Class Firefighter or Firefighter II for 1 year and carry a valid driver’s license. You also must have completed Driver Operator General. If you do not meet these prerequisites you will not receive a Testing ID and will not be allowed to test for this certification until you meet the prerequisites.
